Adventures in Honolulu: Exploring the Treasures of the Pacific Paradise
Imagine this: the day after Christmas in 2017, we were shaking off the winter chill at LAX, all set for our trip to Honolulu. Instead of being at home, we were on a plane jetting off to what we hoped would be the tropical paradise of Hawaii. But as luck would have it, we were greeted with rain upon arrival, far from the sunny welcome we’d anticipated.
Undeterred, we shrugged it off. Checking into our 17th-floor hotel room in the heart of Waikiki, we were optimistic for brighter days ahead. Despite the initial hiccup, we couldn’t wait to dive into our Hawaiian adventure. Stay tuned for more tales of our unforgettable adventures in Honolulu!
Conquering Diamond Head: A Day of Adventure in Honolulu
Embarking on Adventures in Honolulu is an experience; our second day in this paradise was a testament to that. The morning greeted us with a canvas of clear blue skies adorned with big, fluffy clouds – the perfect setting for our ambitious plan: the Diamond Head hike. This isn’t just any ordinary hike; it’s an ascent on an ancient volcano, symbolizing Oahu’s majestic natural beauty.
The journey to the summit of Diamond Head Crater tested our limits, a challenging trek that promised rewards far beyond physical exertion. And indeed, the panoramic views from the top were nothing short of spectacular, a breathtaking spectacle that no words can fully capture. It was a moment of triumph and awe, a reminder of nature’s grandeur.
After such an exhilarating adventure, we sought to conclude our day on a high note. The Hardrock Café in Honolulu was our chosen spot, where we could indulge in delicious meals and celebrate our day’s achievements. It was the perfect end to a day that began with anticipating a challenge and concluded with the satisfaction of accomplishment. Adventures in Honolulu are not just about the places you visit; they’re about the moments of joy, challenge, and celebration you experience along the way. Here’s to days filled with adventure, from the first light of dawn to the twinkling stars at night!
Day Three in Oahu: An Unforgettable Dive into History at Hanauma Nature Preserve
Day three in Oahu started with a morning dip in the crystal-clear turquoise waters of Waikiki Beach – talk about a wake-up call! Once refreshed and pumped, we checked off a major bucket list item – snorkeling with the ancient green sea turtles at the beautiful Hanauma Nature Preserve. Picture this: Hanauma Bay, a stunning snorkeling spot shaped by a volcanic crater full of clear, cool water just teeming with life. It’s easy to see why this place is one of the must-dos in Oahu.
With our snorkeling gear on, we plunged into the bay, weaving through a narrow rock gap to reach the outer reef. Suddenly, we found ourselves in a technicolor world of tropical fish in all shapes, sizes, and colors. But the highlight? Following Gio, we kept pace with a graceful turtle gliding through the water. Something else was floating beside these majestic creatures, who’d been around even before some dinosaurs. Talk about an awe-inspiring moment that’ll stick with us forever! As our day wrapped up, we enjoyed a stunning Hawaiian sunset, tucking into dinner on the beach with a sky lit up in golden and crimson hues. It was the perfect end to a day filled with awe, reflection, and gratitude.

Day Four in Oahu: From Sunrise Swims to Sunset Reflections at Pearl Harbor
On the fourth day of our unforgettable journey, we were drawn to a site of profound historical significance—the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. As we stood over the sunken remains of this storied battleship, a deep sense of respect and remembrance swept over us. The serene silence of the memorial, occasionally disturbed by the sight of oil still seeping from Arizona’s wreckage, served as a sad reminder of the sacrifices made during times of conflict. This powerful site, encapsulating the essence of bravery and loss, deeply moved us, inviting a moment of reflection on the enormity of sacrifice made by those aboard.
During this poignant visit, our paths briefly crossed with the USS Wasp at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam for a scheduled port visit, making a final stop before heading to its new homeport in Sasebo, Japan.. Unbeknownst to us at the time, this sighting of the USS Wasp would not be our last. In an unexpected twist of fate, we would once again encounter this vessel during a San Diego Bay cruise in October 2019. Returning from its station in Japan, the USS Wasp was docked at the San Diego Navy base, serendipitously linking two distinct moments in our travels.
Day Five in Oahu: From Honoring Heroes at Punchbowl Crater to Bidding Aloha at the Airport
Our last day in Honolulu kicked off with a deeply meaningful bus tour. First up, we visited the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, nestled right in the heart of the Punchbowl Crater. This tranquil and beautiful place, filled with stories of brave souls, gave us food for thought. After that, it was time for some royal treatment as we swung by the majestic Iolani Palace, the only royal palace on U.S. soil. This spot had a special significance for Gio, who once worked for Abigail Kinoiki Kekaulike Kawananakoa at her horse ranch in Riverside County. She was the last Hawaiian princess directly linked to the royal family that ruled these amazing islands. The princess passed away at the age of 96 in December 2022.
As we wrapped up the day and our unforgettable Hawaiian adventure, we found ourselves at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. Our hearts were brimming with memories of the places we’d seen, the history we’d explored, and the fun we’d had. With one last look at the beautiful islands, we were off on our flight back to California. Our 2017 trip was over like that, but the experiences will always stay with us.
