Las Vegas – the name conjures images of shimmering casinos, dazzling shows, and the thrill of the jackpot. But beyond the “Entertainment Capital of the World” and the “Sin City” clichés lies a vibrant city ripe for exploration, offering a diverse range of experiences that go beyond the casino floor.
This is Las Vegas reimagined.
My husband Gio and I have ventured to Las Vegas ten times since 2015, each trip a unique chapter in our personal story with this ever-evolving city. From spontaneous Halloween escapades to the mesmerizing spectacle of the Bellagio Fountains and even soaring above Freemont Street on the SlotZilla zip line, we’ve uncovered hidden gems and created unforgettable memories.
Join us as we journey through a decade of Las Vegas adventures, from Fremont Street’s electric energy to Lake Mead’s serene beauty. This isn’t just a travelogue; it’s a visual journey through our Las Vegas getaways captured through the lens of my camera. Discover the unexpected side of Las Vegas, where thrilling experiences, breathtaking sights, and unique moments await those willing to look beyond the stereotypes.
October 2015: A Spontaneous Halloween Adventure in Las Vegas
The Unexpected Turn to Las Vegas
It was Halloween 2015, and Gio and I, still in the early days of our relationship, were planning to attend the West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval. This iconic event, known as the world’s largest Halloween street party, draws over half a million people to Santa Monica Boulevard each year. But as we drove towards the I-215 interchange, a spontaneous idea sparked an unexpected adventure.
Knowing Gio hadn’t explored much outside California since arriving in 2002, I proposed a detour: “Should we continue to West Hollywood, or should we explore Halloween in Las Vegas?” His answer was immediate: “Las Vegas!”
Midnight at the Fremont Street Experience
We veered away from the crowded Southern California freeways with a quick lane change and headed towards the vast Mojave Desert. Three hours later, the dazzling lights of the Las Vegas Strip welcomed us, signaling the start of a thrilling escapade.
While Las Vegas is often associated with casinos and shows, the city offers a unique Halloween experience. We found ourselves immersed in the vibrant energy of the Fremont Street Experience, a must-see for anyone seeking Halloween fun in Vegas. This lively pedestrian mall transforms into a massive Halloween street party, rivaling even the famed West Hollywood Carnaval.
A Day on the Las Vegas Strip
After an unforgettable night immersed in the electric atmosphere of Fremont Street, we checked into our hotel, the Luxor. The pyramid-shaped hotel, with its iconic sphinx guarding the entrance, seemed like a fittingly surreal end to our spontaneous adventure. We managed to catch a few hours of sleep before the desert sun peeked over the horizon, painting the sky with vibrant hues of orange and pink. Eager to explore more of this dazzling city, we fueled up with a quick breakfast and set out to conquer the Las Vegas Strip.
The Strip was a mesmerizing spectacle, a dizzying array of towering resorts, each vying for attention with its unique theme and over-the-top architecture. We strolled past the Venetian, with its romantic canals and gondolas, the Paris Las Vegas, with its Eiffel Tower replica, and the Bellagio, with its breathtaking fountains. The sidewalks buzzed with energy, and there was a constant flow of tourists from around the globe. Captivating street performers – magicians, musicians, and impersonators – added to the vibrant atmosphere, their talents drawing crowds and creating impromptu moments of wonder. Every corner we turned offered a new surprise and spectacle, confirming that Las Vegas is a city that never sleeps and always has something unexpected to offer.

November 2016: Sky-High Thrills and a Veterans Day Salute in Las Vegas
The Thunderbird Airshow at Nellis AFB
Our second Las Vegas getaway in November 2016 coincided with Veterans Day weekend. We planned a special tribute to those who served our country by attending the USAF Thunderbirds’ final airshow of the season at Nellis Air Force Base.
Arriving a day early, we indulged in the allure of the Las Vegas Strip. The highlight of our Saturday was the mesmerizing Bellagio Fountains. Set against a sprawling 8.5-acre man-made lake, these iconic fountains feature 1,214 individual jets that propel water to incredible heights of up to 460 feet. But the true magic lies in the choreographed water displays, where water, light, and music intertwine. The fountains sway in perfect harmony to a diverse soundtrack, ranging from classical masterpieces to contemporary chart-toppers. Each show is a unique spectacle, a sensory feast that captivates the imagination and evokes a range of emotions.
First-Time Adventures on SlotZilla
As dusk settled over the city, our adventure led us to downtown Las Vegas and the Fremont Street Experience, where we encountered SlotZilla, a unique zip line attraction shaped like a giant slot machine. While zip lines are common adventure activities, SlotZilla’s “Zoomline” offers a distinctive “Superhero Style” flight. Instead of the traditional seated harness, riders are launched face-first, mimicking the flight of superheroes.
With arms outstretched, we soared above Fremont Street, taking in panoramic views of the dazzling cityscape illuminated by neon lights. Launching from 114 feet, the Zoomline covers the entire Fremont Street Experience canopy (approximately 1,750 feet). This exhilarating ride provided a thrilling combination of speed, altitude, and a unique city perspective, etching an unforgettable memory into our Las Vegas story.
May 2017: Celebrations with Friends in Las Vegas
A Birthday Bash in Vegas
May 2017 marked our third consecutive year venturing to Las Vegas, a tradition we were quickly coming to adore. This trip was extra special because it wasn’t just about exploring the “Sin City” attractions but celebrating our good friend Robert’s birthday. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the iconic Las Vegas Strip, we met up with Robert and his partner Juan, ready to kick off the festivities.
Our destination for the evening was Señor Frog’s inside Treasure Island. Known for its lively atmosphere and exuberant party scene, Señor Frog’s is where inhibitions are left at the door. Amidst the pulsating music and vibrant decor, people from all walks of life come together to dance, sing, and revel in the moment’s joy. It’s a place where everyone feels comfortable being their authentic selves.
SlotZilla Take Two
After a delicious meal and lively conversation, our next stop was downtown Las Vegas and the electrifying Fremont Street Experience. Our mission? To soar through the neon-lit sky on the SlotZilla Zoomline, superhero-style. For Gio and me, this wasn’t our first time experiencing this thrilling aerial adventure; we had braved the Zoomline the previous year. However, it was a brand new experience for Robert and Juan, their first time strapped into a harness and flying high above the city lights.
The anticipation was palpable – a mix of familiar excitement for us and wide-eyed wonder for our friends. As we geared up, the energy of Fremont Street swirled around us, adding to the excitement and setting the stage for another unforgettable Las Vegas memory.
August 2020: A Las Vegas Escapade Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic
March 11, 2020, marked a significant turning point in our lives. It was the day the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a global pandemic. Social distancing became the norm, and our world turned upside down. Feelings of isolation and cabin fever were rampant. But as restrictions began to ease by June, our desire to escape and experience a Las Vegas adventure, despite the pandemic, outweighed our fears and uncertainty.
The future of travel was uncertain, and predicting outcomes was challenging, but one thing was clear: safety was paramount. While the idea of a vacation was appealing, it required careful planning and precautions like mask-wearing, avoiding crowded spaces, and choosing destinations with ample outdoor activities. This is our story of navigating those new norms and embarking on a safe and memorable Las Vegas trip during the pandemic.
Embarking on Our Las Vegas Adventure: From Southwest Airlines to the High Roller
On August 12, 2020, with the pandemic still gripping the world, my husband Gio and I boarded a nearly empty Southwest Airlines flight for a quick 35-minute journey across the Mojave Desert to Las Vegas. Our previous Las Vegas getaways had never been about gambling; they were always about exploring new experiences, and this trip was no different. We landed at 3 pm and headed to our Paris Las Vegas Hotel & Casino accommodation.
Our first evening in Las Vegas included a delightful dinner at the LINQ Promenade, followed by a ride on the High Roller, the world’s largest observation wheel. The High Roller offered breathtaking panoramic city views, a dazzling spectacle of lights and landmarks. We also made sure to catch the mesmerizing Fountains of Bellagio show, a classic Las Vegas experience. With an exciting day planned for the next day, we turned in early, eager for the adventures that awaited us at the Grand Canyon.
Aerial Adventure: Maverick Helicopter Ride to Grand Canyon West
The highlight of our Las Vegas escapade was a Maverick Helicopter ride to the majestic Grand Canyon West. After a thorough safety briefing, we took off from the airport and took a 45-minute flight. The journey offered awe-inspiring views of the iconic Hoover Dam and the vast Lake Mead Recreation Area before descending into the heart of the Grand Canyon.
We spent the day exploring Eagle Point and the Grand Canyon Skywalk, capturing unforgettable moments and marveling at the breathtaking scenery. At Guano Point, we were treated to a stunning 360-degree panorama of the Colorado River. Our return flight provided a unique aerial tour of downtown Las Vegas and the Strip, including a bird’s-eye view of the newly opened Allegiant Stadium.
Celebrating Amid the Pandemic: A Birthday and Farewell to Las Vegas
On our last day, we relaxedly celebrated Gio’s birthday, including a visit to the iconic “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign. This quintessential symbol of the city served as the perfect backdrop for our commemorative photos. As we reflected on our brief but much-needed escape from the realities of the pandemic, we felt a sense of normalcy and joy.
Despite the challenges of traveling during a pandemic, we managed to create lasting memories in Las Vegas. With these experiences etched in our hearts, we prepared to return home, ready to face whatever the future held.
November 2021: From Wildfires to the Bright Lights of Las Vegas
Adapting Vacation Plans
Our highly anticipated vacation to South Lake Tahoe took an unexpected turn when a major wildfire erupted, forcing us to evacuate. With our plans disrupted and the serene landscapes replaced by smoke-filled skies, we had no choice but to head home. Our journey to safety led us to the Reno Airport, but luck wasn’t on our side; all flights were grounded. After securing a rental car, we embarked on a 7-hour drive, the road ahead filled with uncertainty and the engine’s hum a constant reminder of our disrupted plans.
As we returned, thoughts of salvaging our vacation began to emerge. Among the many destinations that crossed our minds, one stood out, beckoning us with its neon glow: Las Vegas, Nevada.
Exploring the Majestic Hoover Dam
The Hoover Dam, a marvel of human engineering between Nevada and Arizona, offers a multifaceted experience filled with awe and history. For a unique perspective, the Mike O’Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge provides a panoramic view of the dam from high above the Colorado River. This bridge honors Pat Tillman, a former NFL player for the Arizona Cardinals who left his football career to enlist in the US Army and tragically lost his life in Iraq. Like the bridge, his legacy stands as a testament to the sacrifices made by so many.
Our connection to this iconic landmark has deepened over the years. In 2020, we had the opportunity to witness the grandeur of the Hoover Dam from a bird’ s-eye view during a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon. In 2022, our adventures took us to the waters of Lake Mead, where we jet-skied around the dam, experiencing its immense presence from a completely different perspective. Each visit, whether by air or water, has added a new layer of appreciation and wonder for this monumental structure.
Flying High on SlotZilla for the Third Time
Taking flight on the SlotZilla Zoomline is always a thrill, but doing it for the third time brought nostalgia and excitement. Soaring “Superhero Style” over the bustling Fremont Street Experience, I felt a rush of familiar adrenaline and a deeper appreciation for this unique experience.
With each flight on SlotZilla, the neon lights below seem to shine brighter, the cheers from the crowd grow louder, and the sensation of flying above it all becomes even more profound. This third adventure wasn’t just about the thrill; it was a testament to the enduring appeal of this experience, drawing me back time and again to embrace the freedom of flight and the vibrant energy of Las Vegas from a unique perspective.
August 2022: Family Fun, Flights, and Water Adventures in Las Vegas
This four-day Las Vegas getaway in August 2022 was extra special because my sister-in-law, Tammy, joined us. It was her first time experiencing the excitement of the Las Vegas Strip, and we were thrilled to share this adventure with her. Tammy has been an incredible support to our family, always going above and beyond to help at home and care for my mom. This trip was our way of saying “thank you” and giving her a well-deserved break.
After checking into our hotel, we started our Las Vegas experience with the classic Fountains of Bellagio show. Later, we enjoyed a dinner with a side of sarcasm at Dick’s Last Resort, a restaurant famous for its unconventional approach to dining. The waitstaff is rude, sarcastic, and over-the-top, creating a humorous and entertaining experience with a unique twist on traditional dining. To round off the evening, we took a spin on the High Roller Observation Wheel at the LINQ Promenade, enjoying breathtaking city views.
Jet Skiing on Lake Mead and Hoover Dam Views
Our relationship with the Hoover Dam has evolved over the years, with each visit offering a new perspective of this engineering marvel. In 2020, we soared above it in a helicopter en route to the Grand Canyon. In 2021, we admired it from the Mike O’Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. But in 2022, we got up close and personal, experiencing
the dam from the water’s surface while jet skiing on Lake Mead.
Tammy joined Gio on one jet ski, and I was on another. The experience was exhilarating! The wind in our hair, the spray of the water on our faces, and the thrill of skimming across the lake’s surface created an unforgettable adventure.
Lake Mead is the largest man-made reservoir in the United States, but it’s a body of water that has seen better days. Since 1983, the water level has dropped by more than 170 feet due to drought and heavy water usage in the surrounding areas. Witnessing this firsthand added a layer of complexity to our adventure, serving as a poignant reminder of the environmental challenges we face.
Aerial Views with Maverick Helicopters
The highlight of our four-day Las Vegas escape was a surprise we had planned for Tammy: a helicopter tour of Red Rock Canyon with Maverick Helicopters. We took off from the Las Vegas airport, leaving the bustling city behind as we ventured into the natural beauty surrounding it. The 15-minute flight was awe-inspiring, offering panoramic views of the striking red sandstone cliffs that give Red Rock Canyon its name. The contrast between the city’s neon lights and the canyon’s natural grandeur was a sight to behold, and Tammy’s astonishment made the experience even more memorable.
We landed at a secluded spot within the canyon and had 30 minutes to soak in the stunning vistas, including a breathtaking view of the Las Vegas Strip. This moment of serenity offered a stark contrast to the high-energy vibe of the city and gave us all a chance to reflect and appreciate the beauty of nature. As we lifted off for our return journey, the helicopter flew over Fremont Street and the Las Vegas Strip, providing a bird’s-eye view of the city’s iconic landmarks before returning to the airport. This helicopter tour wasn’t just a sightseeing adventure but a meaningful experience that added depth and appreciation to our Las Vegas trip.
Sightseeing Highlights and a Unique Dining Experience
On our final day, we ended our adventure with a unique dining experience at The Heart Attack Grill. We donned hospital gowns, becoming “patients” for the evening, and the atmosphere was charged with excitement and anticipation. The menu, a testament to culinary indulgence, featured an array of high-calorie, high-fat delights. From massive burgers to deep-fried treats and decadent milkshakes, the choices were a gastronomic dare.
As we savored each bite, the staff, dressed as nurses, kept the mood lively with their theatrical antics. And for those brave enough to leave food on their plates, a playful spanking awaited, adding a final touch of audacity to the experience. As I captured these moments with my camera, I couldn’t help but think how perfectly this dinner encapsulated the spirit of our journey – bold, unconventional, and unforgettable. It was a fitting end to a trip filled with “remember when” moments, each now a cherished memory.
August 2023: Capturing the Essence of Las Vegas and Route 66: A Photographic Journey
Our August 2023 road trip to Las Vegas was more than just a visit to the city’s dazzling lights and vibrant energy; it was a journey through time and space, captured through the lens of my camera. From mesmerizing long-exposure photographs of the Las Vegas Strip at night to capturing the timeless allure of historic Route 66, this trip was a feast for the senses and a photographer’s dream.
Las Vegas Strip: A Symphony of Lights
The Las Vegas Strip pulsates with an energy unlike anywhere else. It is a symphony of light and sound where architectural marvels compete for attention against the desert night. I’m drawn to its vibrant chaos and captivating beauty. Using long exposure, I captured the essence of this iconic boulevard.
This image, taken from Flamingo Road near Horseshoe Las Vegas, encapsulates the Strip’s mesmerizing allure. The High Roller, a towering Ferris wheel, becomes a luminous circle of motion, its pods transformed into streaks of light. The vibrant hues of the hotels add layers of depth and color. Even the constant traffic flow becomes an integral part of the composition, its light trails weaving a tapestry of motion.
Historic Route 66: A Journey Through Time
Instead of taking the usual Interstate 15 and 40, we opted for a more scenic route, venturing off the beaten path to explore historic Route 66. Our adventure began with a stop at the world’s largest gas station in Jean, Nevada, boasting an impressive 96 pumps! We then meandered along Nipton Road, pausing at the Nevada and California state lines to capture the unique landscape.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, we witnessed a breathtaking sunset in Cal-Nev-Ari, just off US 95. The grand finale of our Route 66 adventure was capturing a mesmerizing blue hour shot of a BNSF freight train rumbling along Goffs Road. Our detour added a little over an hour to our overall travel time, but the unique sights and photographic opportunities were well worth it! These were visual delights that most travelers miss when sticking to the interstates.
November 2023: Formula 1 Fever and a Ghostly Desert Town
Las Vegas Transformed: The Grand Prix and The Sphere
Fueled by curiosity about the Formula 1 race hype and how it would transform Sin City into a racetrack, we embarked on another Las Vegas road trip just 76 days after our previous adventure. The city was buzzing with anticipation for the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix, and we were eager to witness the transformation.
The Sphere, the world’s largest spherical structure, had recently opened its doors, adding another dimension to the dazzling Las Vegas skyline. U2 had just kicked off their 40-show concert residency at the venue, which can hold up to 20,000 fans. Grandstands, bleachers, and private suites were being constructed along the Strip, and trees were removed along Las Vegas Boulevard in front of the Bellagio Fountains to make way for the race track. The city faced a unique challenge: finding enough space to accommodate the influx of private jets expected to descend upon Las Vegas area airports for race weekend.
A Ghost Town Reclaimed by the Desert: Newberry Springs
Two days later, as we headed home, we ventured off the beaten path to explore more of the Mojave Desert. Our journey led us to the Newberry Springs neighborhood, a ghost town slowly being reclaimed by the desert.
In the 1990s, this once-thriving community fell victim to a peculiar environmental disaster. Due to road construction and changes in the Mojave River’s flow, massive amounts of sand began accumulating. Over time, the relentless desert winds carried the sand into the neighborhood, gradually burying homes and businesses. Residents were forced to abandon their properties, leaving behind a haunting landscape of sand-filled structures and deserted streets.
Today, Newberry Springs stands as a stark reminder of the power of nature and the fragility of human development in the face of environmental challenges. Walking through the abandoned streets, we felt a sense of both awe and melancholy, imagining the lives that were lived here and the forces that led to the town’s demise.
